  • Take notes. Either have a separate notebook and write things down (ideas, concepts, intriguing passages, anything you’d like) or you can simply just write in the margins of the book.
  • Bill Gates recommends to not start a book if you can’t finish it. It’s a tad pointless.
  • Concentrate on what you’re reading, don’t just read the words, try and consider the ideas and come up with some yourself.
  • Take in the new knowledge. Really consider what you are reading. Think about it.
  • Read books that you don’t agree with (to expand your brain, open up to new ideas, etc)
  • Take the time out of your day to sit down and read (don’t cut reading time into little chunks) You can’t spend 5 mins reading or ten minutes reading. For maximum effectiveness, take an hour or longer to really focus on what your reading. Magazines and articles are for smaller readings. Books are not.
  • Bill Gates personally reads a little over an hour every night.
  • Bill Gates has a preference for hard copy books (paper books, books he can physically hold and physically write into, highlight, etc) in comparison to ebooks.

“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years” — Bill Gates
