Steps to Writing Books

The first and most important step is to just remember that you’re writing this book for yourself. Maybe your goal was to share your story through your writing and by publishing a book you’d be able to do that. But in the end, you’re still writing it for yourself, it’s for you. You want to write it, you want to publish it, everything is up to you. With that being said, the best advice possible is to believe in yourself. It may sound cliché, but it’s true. You have got to believe in yourself because maybe nobody else will. As you’re doing this for yourself, it’s up to you to hold yourself accountable and realize that you can do it. It will definitely be hard, writing a book isn’t easy, but you have got what it takes you just have to commit and not be afraid.

Another key aspect of this writing process is the concept, “you learn just by doing”. It sounds simple, but it truly is the only way to go about writing. You won’t be able to learn how to write your book any other way. Of course, you can take writing classes (perhaps from Skillshare or another online class) but the most effective way to start writing a book, is to do it, just start writing. It doesn’t have to be any good, it’s just a good start. Once you’ve started, that’s it, you can tell yourself you’re writing a book. Congratulations! (I’ve heard that telling people in the early stages of writing a book is not advised, but do as you please)

The steps above were the mental steps to take in order to mentally prepare yourself for the writing journey. In the actual process of writing, the first step should be knowing what you are going to write about. What would you like to write about? Then break that down into chapters. I highly recommend planning ahead since it may not be convenient holding all that knowledge in your head (but then again, do what works for you). As always, you don’t have to listen to the advice, it’s absolutely up to you. Breaking it down into chapters just might be easier to understand and remember. As well, during the writing process, it might be easier to focus on one chapter at a time rather than just writing blobs out of nowhere and later forming them into chapters.

In addition to the planning, I would think it helpful to designate proper times out of your schedule and dedicate it to writing your book, if it isn’t for the writing portion, maybe the planning or the editing or the researching. If you give yourself different times for all the possible areas that go into your creation of the book, it might help. Focus on one thing at a time, may that be the writing or the researching, try to separate all tasks since it’s easy to get distracted switching in between both. If you’re in the middle of writing and something pops up, for example, an idea on something you want to add but not quite sure the exact science behind it, you might want to consider adding a note of a little message such as the one below:

  • Add in the research later

Or maybe it might be easier to have it in all caps so you remember during your research time

  • ADD IN THE RESEARCH LATER

If that doesn’t work, try out other techniques until you find something that does. I’d be interested in knowing what works best for you.

Time management is also a tricky one to learn, but once you have it down, it can be the most helpful skill ever. I don’t have quite enough advice on this since I haven’t mastered this skill yet. But I will say that it’s better to just get things done instead of procrastinating. Again, easier said than done.

Something that might help you though is setting in place a writing routine. This can be adjusted to your preferences. It can be a very well set in stone routine or just a writer when you please type of schedule. But the point is to have a goal and to find an area that can best help you achieve that goal, perhaps even set the mood and motivate you to achieve that goal. This really is according to one’s preference. Personally, I either go to a coffee shop or to a library, but if a specific park or beach or whatever it may be, helps you, go for it. If you cannot go anywhere, try to find the best place possible in your home. You can always accompany it with your favorite drink, tea, coffee, or hot chocolate :)

Moving onto ways to avoid writer’s block. The first being your fears. Once again, easier said than done, but don’t let your fears control you. Control your mind, train it to listen to you. Procrastination doesn’t only come from boredom, but it can also come from your fears. Fears lead to procrastination. If I were to think my words aren’t well said, it’s insanely unmotivating. Stop thinking about whether or not your words are good enough. The same goes for what other people are going to think about your new book. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter. Obviously everyone wants that good review, but you have got to remember the first step and rule. You are writing this for yourself. Your book is for you. So your opinion speaks loudest and who cares if nobody likes it. You fricking wrote a book.

Lastly, don’t judge yourself too harshly. Just start writing, you can always go back and edit it. Just writing down a few words is impressive. And if you’ve already published a book and aren’t pleased with the outcome (either you yourself aren’t pleased or you got negative feedback and it’s weighing you down) you can (and should) try again. Write another book. Write as many books as you want. As many books as it takes. I wish you all the best ❤
